Quick answer

Fascia is the board along the roof edge that gutters fix to, and soffit is the underside of the overhang. They rot when water gets behind the gutter or a clogged trough overflows. Repair them before new gutters go up, because hangers need sound wood. Ask for rotten wood to be cut out, not wrapped over, and ask why it got wet in the first place.

Look for
Peeling paint, soft wood, stains, sagging gutter
Common cause
Overflow, or water behind the trough
Order of work

Fascia and soffit repair means replacing the soft or damaged boards along the roof edge. Fascia is the board a gutter hangs on, and soffit is the underside of the overhang. If they're rotten, a new gutter won't stay up for long.

How much does fascia and soffit repair cost in St. Louis?

We have no St. Louis trim price we can stand behind, and contractors set their own. You often can't tell how far rot goes until the gutter comes off, so ask for a unit price for any extra board before work starts. The length of the damage, the height of the wall and the material all move the quote. How to read a St. Louis gutter quote shows what to look for.

How do you spot rotten fascia or soffit?

  • Paint peeling in one stretch of fascia, especially below a corner.
  • A screwdriver sinks in easily. Do this from a safe ladder.
  • A gutter that sags again soon after being re-hung.
  • Stains or holes in the soffit, or birds and squirrels using it.

Should you choose wood, composite or a wrap?

New wood painted on all sides keeps the look of an older house. PVC or composite trim resists rot but looks different up close. Aluminum wrap is common, and it's fine over sound wood. Over soft wood it hides rot until the gutter falls off. If a quote says "wrap", ask what happens to the boards underneath.

Why are old cornices a different job?

Many St. Louis brick houses from the 1800s have brackets and moldings instead of a plain fascia. That's millwork, not trim, and it may hide a box gutter. In a City Historic District, changes to it may need review by the Cultural Resources Office. Ask if the contractor has repaired one before, and ask to see it.

What causes fascia and soffit damage?

Rotten wood is usually a symptom. Common causes include a missing drip edge, a gutter set too low or too far out, ice at the eave, clogged outlets, and a roof that dumps water behind the trough. Ask what caused yours, or you'll be fixing it again.

What about old paint on the trim?

Exterior paint on older houses may contain lead. Federal rules set work practices for renovators on pre-1978 housing, so ask the contractor how they'll deal with old paint before anyone starts scraping or cutting.

The process

How a fascia & soffit repair request works

You pay us nothing, and you don't have to accept any quote.

  1. You tell us about the house

The address, what's wrong, brick or siding, how many stories. It's one short form.

  2. We pass it to a contractor

An independent local contractor gets your request. If they can take the job, they contact you directly.

  3. You decide

The contractor measures and quotes. Your agreement, price and warranty are with them. Saying no costs you nothing.

Before you sign

What to ask the contractor

  1. How much is really rotten?

Ask them to probe it and show you, and to price it per foot beyond what's visible.

  2. What goes back?

Wood, composite or wrap, and how the ends and joints get sealed.

  3. What caused it?

Ask them to fix the cause too, and to put it in the quote.

  4. What about old paint?

On older houses, ask how they'll handle possible lead paint.

Fascia & Soffit Repair FAQ

Can gutters be hung on a rotten fascia?

They shouldn't be. Hangers need sound wood, and a soft board will let the gutter pull away, sometimes within a winter. Have the bad sections replaced first.

Is aluminum wrap bad?

Not over sound wood. It saves painting. The trouble is when wrap goes over rot, because you can't see the damage getting worse. Ask them to show you the wood before it gets covered.

Who repairs fascia, a gutter contractor or a carpenter?

Many gutter contractors handle plain fascia and soffit. For decorative cornices and brackets on old houses, a carpenter or restoration specialist may be a better fit. Ask what they've done.

Why do I have animals in my soffit?

Rot opens gaps that squirrels and birds will use. Repair the opening and check for what's living there first. Don't seal an animal in.
