Reviewed November 3, 2026. Gutter Installation St. Louis is a referral service; independent contractors do the work.
Gutter guards keep most debris out of the trough so you clean less often, but no guard is maintenance-free. Fine mesh tends to do best against the small seeds and catkins common under St. Louis trees, though it can collect fine grit and needs brushing. Ask how the guard fixes to the roof edge, whether it affects your shingle warranty, and how it behaves in ice.

Comparing the types
| Type | Keeps out | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|
| Fine stainless mesh | Leaves, seeds, most grit | Fine dirt film. Needs brushing. Often the costlier choice. |
| Perforated metal | Leaves and larger seeds | Small seeds and catkins can get through or sit on the holes. |
| Foam or brush inserts | Larger debris | Hold debris and damp. Need lifting out to clean. |
| Reverse-curve hood | Leaves slide off | Heavy rain can overshoot. Changes the look of the eave. |
St. Louis trees
Maple seeds, oak catkins and small twigs are what defeat the cheap options. Big-leaf drop is the easy case for any guard. Sycamore bark and sweetgum balls will sit on top and need sweeping off, especially on low-pitch roofs where they don't blow away. The guard guide goes through it tree by tree.
Ice
A guard doesn't stop ice. Snow can sit on a mesh surface and freeze there, and meltwater can run over a frozen guard rather than through it. If your house already gets ice at the eave, deal with the attic and roof causes first, and ask the contractor directly what their product does in that situation.
Old roofs and old gutters
Some guards slip under the first course of shingles, which can matter for a roof warranty. Slate and older roofs are less forgiving of anyone lifting them. Guards also add weight and fixings to whatever is already up there, so a sagging or leaking gutter should be fixed first. Guards on a box gutter are a special case that calls for someone who knows those systems.
Read the guarantee closely
Claims like "never clean again" deserve a careful read. Ask what the guarantee covers, who honors it if the installer closes, and what it excludes. Get it in writing.
What to ask the contractor
- Which type, and why for my trees?Ask them to name your trees and explain how the product handles them.
- How does it fix to the roof edge?Under the shingles, on the drip edge or on the gutter lip? Ask if that affects your roof warranty.
- What's the upkeep?Get an honest answer about brushing and downspout checks.
- What about ice?Ask what happens at the eave in a freeze and thaw.
- What does the guarantee say?Ask to read it before signing, not after.

Guards: questions
Are gutter guards worth it in St. Louis?
Under heavy trees, or on houses where ladder work is hard, many owners think so. On a house with few trees and an easy reach, two cleanings a year may be simpler. Compare the guard quote with what you'd pay for years of cleaning.
Do I still have to clean with guards?
Yes, less often. Debris sits on top and fine grit gets through. Downspouts can still block. Plan on a look at least once a year.
Can guards go on my existing gutters?
Usually, if the gutters are sound and properly pitched. Fix any sags or leaks first, since a guard makes them harder to reach later.
Do guards cause ice dams?
Ice dams come mainly from heat escaping through the roof and melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. Guards don't cause that, but they don't cure it, and they can make frozen gutters harder to clear.
