Which gutter guard for St. Louis trees?
By Gutter Installation St. Louis, a referral service. Updated November 3, 2026.
Under trees with small debris, like oak catkins and maple seeds, fine mesh tends to work best, because larger perforations let small pieces through or get plugged. Big leaves are easy for most types. Sweetgum balls and sycamore bark sit on top of any guard and must be swept off. No guard ends maintenance, so compare the price against years of plain cleaning.

- Name your trees before you shop.
- Finer mesh handles smaller debris but needs occasional brushing.
- Foam and brush inserts hold debris and damp.
- Read the guarantee before you sign.
Match the guard to the tree
| Tree debris | What it does | Guard notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oak catkins and tassels | Stringy, mat together in spring | Fine mesh keeps them out, though they may need brushing off |
| Maple seeds | Slip into wider slots and sprout in muck | Fine mesh or tight perforation |
| Big autumn leaves | Pile and block outlets | Most guards work, leaves need wind or sweeping |
| Sweetgum balls | Roll and lodge at low points | Sit on top, clear them by hand |
| Sycamore bark and fluff | Flat pieces cover the surface | Can blanket any guard. Check more often |
| Pine needles | Spear through openings | Fine mesh, and check the seams |
Roof pitch matters
On steeper roofs, wind and rain tend to clear debris off a guard. On low pitches and porch roofs, it stays put. If most of your gutter is under a low-pitch porch, you may gain less from a guard than the sales pitch suggests.
Do the arithmetic
Compare the guard quote with what you pay, or would pay, for cleaning over the years you expect to stay in the house. Include whatever upkeep the guards still need. If ladder work is hard or risky on your house, that's a real reason to buy guards, regardless of the math.
Fix the gutter first
A guard fixed to a leaking, sagging or flat gutter just makes the problem harder to reach. Ask for the run to be checked, cleaned and tested before the guard goes on.
Questions before you buy
- How does it fix to the roof edge? Could that affect the roof warranty?
- Can it be lifted for cleaning and put back?
- What's the guarantee, and who stands behind it?
- Will it work with my slate, tile or old shingles?
- What happens to snow and ice on it?
- Are sales visits or financing offers involved? Take your time, and get other quotes.
Winter behavior is covered in ice dams and freeze and thaw.
Questions
What's the best gutter guard?
There's no single best, and we don't sell any. Under small-debris trees, fine stainless mesh tends to do well. On lighter loads, simpler types may be enough. Pick for your trees and roof.
Can I install guards myself?
Drop-in types are DIY-friendly on a low, safe roof edge. Fine mesh systems usually fit better when installed by someone experienced. Don't lift old shingles or slate without knowing how.
Do guards void a roof warranty?
Some can, if they fix under shingles or through them. Check your roof warranty first, and ask the installer how theirs fixes.
Do guards keep squirrels and birds out?
They can help keep nesting out of the trough. A determined squirrel can still chew or lift loose types. Check fixings if you see animals on the roof edge.
